Alcohol and Menopause: Know Your Risks

Menopause and aging can intensify the effects of alcohol in women. Hormonal changes slow metabolism and the body’s ability to process alcohol. Alcohol also can worsen menopause symptoms and increase disease risks including:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats: Alcohol dilates blood vessels, causing heat and perspiration.
  • Sleep quality: Alcohol might help you fall asleep, but it disrupts deep sleep and can contribute to menopause-related insomnia.
  • Weight gain: Menopause and alcohol both contribute to weight gain.
  • Mood changes: Fluctuating hormones can contribute to more intense mood swings and potential feelings of depression.
  • Cardiac disease and osteoporosis: Aging and hormone changes naturally contribute to heart disease and osteoporosis risks, and excessive alcohol consumption further elevates these risks.
  • Alcohol use disorder: Excessive drinking combined with a slowed metabolism increase risk for addiction.

Take caution if you find you are drinking more to relax and enjoy life or to cope with stress or emotional changes. Moderation is key. It is wise for women to be mindful of how alcohol interacts with both their body and mind during the menopause transition and after.
